Chocolate tahini spread is a luscious blend of 100% cocoa powder, smooth tahini, a hint of vanilla, and a touch of salt. It’s rich, glossy, and perfect for spreading on bread, dipping fruit, or enjoying straight from the spoon.
I use tahini all the time, and when I was craving a chocolate spread, I decided to make my own based on a few simple pantry ingredients and it turned out beautifully. I enjoy it on organic rice cakes with sliced fruit on top. But sky is the limit with how you could use this!
If you love tahini as much as I do, you might also enjoy my molasses tahini spread, tahini citrus dressing, or tahini turmeric dressing, all easy ways to make the most of this versatile ingredient.

Ingredients
To make this chocolate tahini spread, I just used what I already had in my pantry, if you’ve been following me for a while, chances are you have it all too.
It’s simply a matter of whisking together 100% cocoa powder (or cacao powder), tahini, water, vanilla extract, maple syrup, and a pinch of salt. If you’re in the mood for a little heat, add a pinch of chili. In the recipe card below, I’ve linked the tahini brand I regularly use.
The complete list of ingredients with measurements, can be found in the full recipe card below.

Janelle’s Tips and Storage
- If the cocoa powder your using is a little clumpy, use a sieve, otherwise, a very vigorous whisk will help smooth it out.
- Use room temperature water when mixing so the tahini doesn’t seize. If your tahini is thick or clumpy, a little warm water and some elbow grease will help smooth it out.
- To turn this into a chocolate tahini sauce, simply add more water, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
- Store the spread in an airtight container in the fridge for several months. It will become even creamier!
