What are Chocolate Bliss Balls?
Interchangeably called chocolate protein balls, chocolate energy balls, chocolate protein bites or chocolate energy bites.
They are normally the size of 2-3 bites, or just under the size of a golf ball.
Generally made with all-natural energy-boosting and filling ingredients such as nuts, seeds, dried fruits, natural sweeteners and cacao powder.
Ingredients Highlight
Notes on some of the ingredients, the full list of ingredients and their measurements can be found in the recipe card below.
Almond meal is made up of 100% raw almonds which have been ground up with their peel. This is the main ingredient, which can easily be purchased at your local health food store, or supermarket.
Desiccated coconut is dried coconut that has been cut into small pieces, it is not the same as shredded coconut, however, shredded coconut can be used.
Rolled oats or plain quick oats are added as one of the filler components. Oats are a fabulous all-natural ingredient that will help keep you feeling full for longer and boast a nice amount of protein.
If you are on a gluten-free diet, ensure you read the labels, as most oats are handled in facilities that process gluten products. Check for certified gluten-free oats.
Maple syrup should be 100% maple syrup, this natural sweetener helps to bind the ingredients of these bliss balls without dates and give them some moisture.
Raw cacao powder is 100% cocoa without any added ingredients, there should be no added sugars. This ingredient on its own is bitter (it is unsweetened cocoa powder), but once combined with maple syrup is so chocolatey. You can find this in your health food store, or section of your local supermarket. I have also used this ingredient in the best gluten free vegan sweet potato brownies.
Cocoa nibs add some crunch and are what raw cacao powder is made of. Cacoa nibs can be purchased online (affiliate link) or from your local health food shop.
Pro Tips
You will need to scrap the sides of the food processor a couple of times to ensure that all the ingredients are blended.
Once these chocolate balls are stored in the fridge, they will harden a little and be less soft.
FAQ
Yes, absolutely. Use a large mixing bowl and add all the dry ingredients first, and combine until evenly mixed. Then add the wet ingredients using either your hands or a fork to mix together until everything is again evenly combined. Then roll them into bite-sized balls. It would be best to use quick oats rather than rolled oats.

Make these minty, by adding a drop of mint extract. The combination of chocolate, coconut, and mint is wonderful. Or make these into choc orange balls by adding a drop of orange extract. Some coating ideas include desiccated/shredded coconut, various crushed nuts, sesame seeds (this adds some lovely crunch), freeze-dried raspberries, matcha powder, or plain cacao (bitter flavor). You might also like these matcha balls. US cups and spoons measurements have been used. 1 cup is 240ml, 1 tablespoon 15ml, 1 teaspoon 5ml.

Hey Janelle, do you think I can use my own almond meal for this recipe? I make homemade almond milk, and I've been trying to find a way to use the strained almond bits for something.
Janelle Hama
I don't see why not!

Im confused by the 1/4 and 1/8 maple syrup twice in the ingredients list. Does this mean 1/4-1/8 maple syrup depending on what you need. Or does it mean add 1/4 and 1/8 which would be like 1 cup and a bit?
Janelle Hama
You will need both measurements in there, both 1/4 and 1/8. Sorry about this, I will make it easier to understand
datehater
Im so glad this is without date, (I'm allergic). thank you PBF for recipe.

Jumped onto these as soon as you sent them in email Janelle. These are the best chocolate bliss balls ever! I normally buy some from the shops, but find them either too dry or too oily. You're a life saver. I also want to say that I like the crunchiness from the cocoa nibs.
Janelle Hama
This just shows how quick and easy these bliss balls are, thank you for making them and I am so glad you like them!
