This dip is like hummus without chickpeas. It’s quick, creamy, and made with white beans.
Oh em gee! Forgive me! Yep I penned down that headline “hummus without chickpeas”. It doesn’t make any sense!
As a person with Middle Eastern heritage, I know that there is no such thing, hummus is the Arabic word for “chickpeas”! So you see it just doesn't work, even if I called it "white bean hummus".
So why the heck did I write that?
Many folks are abstaining from chickpeas (think allergies and sensitivities) and still want to make an alternative hummus dip resembling the texture and look of the original. So here we are.
About The Ingredients
Here are notes on some of the ingredients, the complete list with measurements, can be found in the full recipe card below.
To replace the chickpeas in hummus, I like to use a white bean such as butter beans, great northern beans, cannellini, or similar.
These types of beans are neutral and take on the flavoring of tahini, lemon, and garlic, which are the flavorings of any good homemade hummus.
As this dip uses minimal ingredients, I strongly recommend using good-quality tahini, fresh lemon juice and garlic for the best taste.
For inspiration for adding different flavors, take a look at my jalapeno hummus with cilantro.
Janelle’s Tips
The quantities of the ingredients can be adjusted to suit your liking, however, always start with a lesser quantity and adjust from there.
This method ensures the texture remains creamy without being runny. I always do this with my hummus with beets.
Storage
I always ensure there is homemade dip in the fridge for the whole family to enjoy, it stores for up to one week in an airtight container.
Here's another bean dip that's handy to keep in the fridge.
