What is Dalgona Coffee?
Dalgona coffee became an overnight social media sensation, however, foam coffee has been around for decades in various countries, just ask your granny.
Only 3 ingredients - instant coffee, sweetener, milk (not including the boiling water)
There are two layers; the top layer is the foam which is velvety & bitter and the bottom layer is the milk (either hot or cold).
😋Why you’ll love this recipe
- It’s foamy, yet velvety. A smooth drinking experience
- It’s inexpensive, yet feels luxurious
- Any type of milk can be used, this version is dairy free (vegan)
- Can be made hot or cold
✔️What You’ll Need
☕Ingredients
Instant coffee - you can use your preferred brand, I like to use Moccona classic (affiliate link).
Raw sugar is used to help create foam and to sweeten the bitterness in conjunction with a little bit of boiling water
Milk (use your preference) I like to use unsweetened almond milk.
☕How To Make Foam Coffee
Step 1 - In a bowl, place all ingredients (excluding milk)
Step 2 - Using either a handheld beater or whisk, foam up the ingredients until peaks form. If you can use an electric beater/mixer/whisk this would be ideal as it quickens the time and effort.
Step 3 - Pour your preferred milk into a cup (I used almond) and top with whip.
Note - you can use cold milk (my personal favorite, as it makes the nicest iced instant coffee (add some ice too), or you can use hot milk.
⭐ Pro Tips
Granulated sugar (raw, white, brown or coconut) is what helps to create a thick foam. I have found the amount I have used to work well is really creamy.
Make it ahead by making the whip and storing it in the fridge for 1 day. I found the 2nd day it did start to water down, but it still was good enough to use.
🥛Variations
Your preferred milk can be served cold or warmed up or frothed up.
For a pimped up iced instant coffee version, try adding a scoop of vanilla nice cream to the cold milk and a scoop of ice. Read about 10 best instant coffees.
Add your favourite spices like nutmeg or cinnamon
Turn it into a mocha by adding some cocoa powder (affiliate link) and stirring it through the milk
Add syrups such as caramel or vanilla, try this caramel syrup by We Are Not Martha or this lavender syrup by Hildas Kitchen or even this cranberry simple syrup by Casual Foodist.
❓FAQ
Fill up your cup with cold or warmed milk, then top with the foam. I like to stir mine through, although it never seems to fully blend together, it still is a great drink, like smooth iced instant coffee (you can add ice)
The whip can be stored overnight in the fridge, sealed in a cup and snap lock bag. There will be slight seperation (liquid) but it is still usable.
It's actually quite bitter, creamy like a mousse. However, the bitterness can be alleviated by stirring through you preferred milk and, if desired, adding a sweetener. It is a rich velvety smooth drink.
